How: G Adventures 'Soloish Uzbekistan' Tour

Central Asia is a region at the crossroads of history, shaped by thousands of years and the rise and fall of countless empires. As a vital part of the Great Silk Road that connected traders and goods between China, India, and Europe, the region witnessed the flourishing of the Islamic Golden Age, the expansion of the Mongol Empire, and the grandeur of the Timurid Dynasty before eventually falling under the control of the Russian Empire and, later, the Soviet Union.
After gaining independence in 1991, Uzbekistan emerged — alongside Kazakhstan — as one of Central Asia’s most compelling destinations, celebrated for its hospitality and breathtaking Islamic architecture. From the modern capital of Tashkent, with its museum-like metro stations and vibrant Chorsu Bazaar, to the historic Silk Road cities of Bukhara and Samarkand, Uzbekistan offers travelers a journey through millennia of history, culture, and cuisine.
For me, the G Adventures “Solo-ish Uzbekistan” tour provided an excellent introduction to all of this in a relatively short, unhurried nine-day trip. There are longer itineraries that explore all five Central Asian “Stans” — adding Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan — and if I’d had the time, I would have loved to see the entire region. Still, Uzbekistan proved to be the perfect sampler of everything this fascinating, off-the-beaten-path destination has to offer.
